Many of my assignments have been completed and I am taking a break for a few days before I start preparing for my exams. During this time, I have been able to think about nursing and the reasons why I decided to enter into the field. I have always wanted to have a profession in the healthcare field but I wasn’t too sure if I wanted to become a nurse or enter medical school and become a doctor. The reason why I decided to choose nursing instead of health science was because I realized nursing is a more hands on career as opposed to being a doctor. I wanted to be able to develop a therapeutic relationship with my patients. I wanted the opportunity to be able to know the patient as a human being instead of just a disease. I also chose the nursing program because I believe it is a very rewarding career where you are faced with new challenges every day. I think that nursing is a career for me as it reflects many of my personal values and characteristics. I am a person who always thinks about others before myself and is one who genuinely wishes good upon others and wants to help in any way I can.
In my Development of Self class the other week we watched a video that made me realize exactly why I want to become a nurse as soon as I can. It demonstrated the shortage of nurses Canada is going through. Thinking about the idea that patients will not be able to get proper care due to the fact that there is not enough nurses makes me sick to my stomach. Below I have posted the video for all of you to appreciate the importance of nurses in today’s society.
